A mix of life tales in modern Japan where fate is predicted by your name and a fingerplay song. Are the members of this society playing into the hands of some higher being or are they living the life of impermanence?

I Am a Motif

三者三様のモチーフ。それぞれ違いすぎて自己疑念まで生じてしまう。だが旋律が流れ始めると音のモチーフは抑えきれずに踊り出し、ほかのモチーフもあとを続く… 実は「私」もモチーフなのか？
Realizing how different they are from one another, the three motifs - musical, visual and narrative - start to doubt themselves. But once the melody begins, the musical motif could not resist the impulse to dance and the others follow. Perhaps I, too, am a motif.

Alice goes out and opens doors as she pleases. The houses show her fragments of love that we all long for day to day throughout our lives.

ごく普通の1日のはずだったが、いつも通りではなかった。お祖母さんの家の前には大勢の人が現れた。人々はどこから来て、どこへ行くのだろう。私は窓から人々を覗いているが、木の繁みが邪魔をしている。
It should have been an ordinary day but it was anything but usual. There was a large crowd in front of my grandma’s house. Where did the people come from and where were they going? I was peering out at them from the window, but the big tree obstructed my view.

黒猫の入った路地裏の先、そこには人ならざるものが幸せに暮らす街が広がっていた。自分の住処に戻り寝床につこうとすると、突然隣から奇妙な音が聞こえてくる。
Deep down the alley the black cat has entered is a town where nonhuman beings live in peace. The cat returns to his home to rest when suddenly he hears a strange sound coming from next door.

どうしたらもうすでにいない死者と向き合えるだろうか。遺影の中でしか会ったことがない曽祖母の少女の頃、そして遺影の２枚の写真を撮影し現像する中で、彼女と改めて向き合い、出会い直すことを試みる。
How can we get to know the deceased? I tried to meet and connect with my great-grandmother whom I only had known to exist in a portrait by photographing and developing her pictures at two different ages.

灰色の空間に突如落ちてくる粘土。白い粘土は人に、黒い粘土はモンスターに形を変えた。しかし身体を動かすたびにどんどんと磨り減ってしまう。二人は、生き続けるために戦いを選んだ。
Lumps of clay fall into the grey space. The white clay turns into a man, the black clay into a monster. The two lose their flesh every time they move so they start a battle to stay alive.

この作品を作るきっかけとして、作者である私自身の母親の死があります。
彼女が病気で亡くなった後しばらく、闘病中の彼女の姿が繰り返し思い出され、これまで親子として過ごす中で感じていた、彼女の人物像に靄がかかっている様な状態になりました。その霧を払う様に彼女との記憶を一度整理し、故人の人物像をこの物語の中で再構築しました。
