The Epic of Eye Plowing
IMAI Riko
I wonder if, as humans cultivate their gaze on the world, they can step into the uncharted realms of immeasurable darkness.
Behind the Scenes
What inspired you to create this work?
In high school, I started questioning how we should perceive things that are not perceptible. Since then, I've continued to create works themed around “perceiving the invisible.” The inspiration for this work came from wanting to tackle this question based on my intuition, rather than logic.
What difficulties did you face?
It was challenging to grasp the image of an “invisible presence.” As it's literally imperceptible to humans, it was very difficult to form a concrete image. Also, expanding my imagination based on intuition required intense concentration, so I spent a lot of time in meditation-like states with my eyes closed.
What did you try or do differently this time compared to your past work?
Previously, my animation process involved solidifying the content and structure in writing before expanding the image. However, this time I expanded on spontaneously conceived images and modified them into a coherent story. The process of expanding content through images rather than words felt like wandering without an exit and was anxiety-inducing. But as I continued to work, I gradually became more able to connect and create new images from the ones that came to my mind.
What is your next goal?
I've been interested in installations that treat the entire exhibit as a work since I was an undergraduate, so I want to create installation works based on the animations I've learned in graduate school. I'm also interested in online exhibitions, not just physical ones, so I want to start studying programming. And I want to read as many books as possible.
