アニメーション専攻では、今年度の修了上映テーマに「COMMA」を掲げました。
私たちが作る1枚は、1秒にも満たない、コンマ1秒ほどの小さな時間にしかなりません。そうした小さな時間を積み重ね、変化させることによって動きを作り、そこに世界を生み出していきます。
私たちが生きていくことも、そうした小さな毎日の積み重ねのように感じます。しかし私たちを取り巻く環境は時に、連続性を保てないような断絶をもたらすことを、今年は痛いほど思い出させられた年でした。
この状況下が我々学生にもたらしたものは「集うことができない」ことでした。いつでも誰かが居て、常に明かりが灯っていた校舎はしんと静まり返り、それまでのアニメーション専攻の日常を180度ひっくり返すような１年となりました。それぞれの場所で、時折画面ごしに同じく頑張る同級生の姿を感じ取りながら、なんとか制作を続けていく。そうした状況を乗り越え、生み出された作品たちが、今、ここに集います。
また、今回のコンマにはもう一つの意味合いがあります。記号のCOMMAは文章の中の「ひと区切り」として用いられますが、この記号を書く時、それまで動かしていた手を一旦止め置き、そして勢いよくはらい、次に続く言葉を綴っていきます。そうした一度区切りをつけながらも、それが次の一手へと踏み出すものに、私たちの修了作品がなっていくよう願いを込め、COMMAという言葉を選びました。
皆様にとっても、鑑賞する時間が、一度立ち止まり、これまでと今の自分の地点を見渡し、そして次への一歩を蹴り出す、そんな力を皆様の内に生み出せるものになりましたら幸いです。

We give “COMMA” as the theme for this year’s graduation screening in the Department of Animation.
Each drawing that we make amounts to a mere 0.1 seconds give or take (noted in some countries as 0,1) that doesn’t even fill a single second. We create worlds through accumulating those brief intervals of time, which we transform to create movement.
Our lives also feel like the accumulation of the brief intervals of each day. However, this was a year that brought about painful recognition that the environment surrounding us sometimes causes ruptures that do not allow continuity.
The thing that these circumstances brought us students was “not being able to gather together.” The building where the lights were always on and someone was always present turned quiet. It was a year when daily life in the animation department was flipped 180 degrees. We managed to continue working, each at our own place, sometimes sensing classmates also doing their best beyond the screen. The works gathered here came into being through overcoming those circumstances.
This year’s “COMMA” has another meaning. The comma symbol is used as a “pause” within a sentence, and when writing this symbol we rest the hand that we were moving until that moment, make a vigorous comma stroke and continue on with writing down the next words. We selected the word COMMA with the hope that while we do take a pause here with our works completed, they will also lead us to our next step.
